Taste the natural intensity of the original Zinfandel grape from its ancestral homeland
Genetic research on the origin of Zinfandel came to fruition in 2001 -- it confirmed that Zinfandel and Primitivo originated from Croatia. At the point of discovery, the “original Zinfandel” was near extinction; there were only nine vines left on a vineyard somewhere off the coast of Split.
Since the discovery in 2001, the Plenkovic family has lovingly grown a vineyard dedicated to the original Zinfandel using exclusively organic methods. The result has a beautiful nose of cherry jam and spices, almost as if you are walking in an Arab market. In the mouth it is powerful and intense: ripe red cherries, sweet strawberries, fragrant blossom, mild bitters of dried sage and again those spices.
How to enjoy it
Great with grilled steaks, lamb and of course our XO Pag Cheese.
Who makes it
The Zlatan Otok winery owned by the Plenkovic family using exclusively manual techniques.
Zinfandel (Crljenak Kastelanski) from the winery's organically farmed vineyards north of Makarska.
