Epicurean Market 2017 at Marina Bay Sands

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The Epicurean Market is returning to Marina Bay Sands. This is a special moment for us, because it’s where we launched The Adriatic Pantry one year ago. Thanks to your support, our little experiment seems to have worked. So we’re coming back, a year older and a year wiser. And to celebrate we’ve also invited our friend, and third-generation truffle hunter, Ivan Karlić to join us from Croatia. He’ll be teaching a fresh summer truffle masterclass on Saturday, and there are a few tickets left if you’re interested. Otherwise just stop by to say hi, and pick up some fresh truffles we’re flying in especially for the occasion. We’ll be by the huge Pag sheep as...

Try a bottle of Zlatan Grand Cru, Croatia’s most awarded red 🍷🍇🍴Now available in Singapore

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

Two years ago, right after we got married in Dubrovnik, we started driving up the Adriatic coast. After planning the wedding for a year, the plan afterwards was to not have a plan.As we went north from island to island, we ended up on the southern side of Hvar and went as far as the road would go. There, in a gorge below the highest point on the island, is the tiny village of Sveta Nedjelja and the home of Zlatan Plenković, Croatia’s most awarded winemaker. We loved the peaceful, relaxed vibe of the place and decided to stay a few days. As we sat down for dinner, we saw the man himself at the table next to us with a magnum...

Experimental Corner

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

We at the Adriatic Pantry have been surrounded by science all our lives. Scientists are our parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. So, it’s no surprise that some of it has rubbed off.If you’ve visited us at our market pop-ups you will have seen the scientific method in action with our experimental products. Every month we try to test some of the more unusual items we bring back from our trips to the Adriatic by asking you to vote with your toothpicks on what we should bring in.So far, the toothpicks have spoken in favor of two experimental products – Truffle Cheese and Slavonian Mini Kulen. And we have plenty more to test, so we’ve decided to bring the...

Moms ❤ Truffles & Bubbles

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

By all accounts, Ann Jarvis was an amazing woman. During the American Civil War, she devoted herself to peace, caring for the sick and wounded on both sides of the conflict. After the war, she worked tirelessly to unify a divided country starting “Mothers Friendship Day” for soldiers and their families from both sides despite threats of violence. When Ann died in 1905, her equally determined daughter Anna started a campaign to create a holiday that would honor her and all mothers. By 1914 her efforts were successful and President Woodrow Wilson officially made the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day. However, capitalism soon stepped in and Anna became livid with the commercialization of the holiday she created to celebrate mothers. She...

It's not easy being a boutique food importer from Singapore.

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

It's not easy being a boutique food importer from Singapore. First, your truffle hunting family partners insist on wining and dining you at quaint Istrian countryside restaurants. Then they feed you not one, but two gigantic omelettes each with a different type of fresh black winter truffles. As you go down the coast to visit a master prosciutto maker at this home, he rolls out not just the best part of his famous prosciutto, but also pancetta cut into chunky cubes (a.k.a. Croatian Haribo), his home-made olive oil, three different varieties of garlic, and a delicious vinegar made from Maraska cherries grown in his orchard. Next his buddy, the cheese maker, takes you on a tour of his cheese aging...

Xmas Gift Sets

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

Here at The Adriatic Pantry we’re big fans of science. So now that the holiday gift giving season is upon us, we turned to evolutionary anthropology for inspiration.True supportive, reciprocal friendships are crucial to our physical and mental well-being. However, maintaining friendships requires effort and, importantly, brainpower which is limited. Based on the work of British anthropologist Robin Dunbar in the 1990s we now know that brain size across species is very closely related to social group size. This is the famous Dunbar's Number that states humans can comfortably maintain only up to 150 stable friendships.Of course, not all of these 150 friendships are created equal. It turns out friendships exist in layers, roughly following a rule of threes. We...

Limited edition first harvest oil that’s born to be wild

Posted by The Adriatic Pantry on

Two weeks ago Tedi Chiavalon, the right half of the hipster Chiavalon brothers who are shaking up the olive oil world from their base in southern Istria, sent us the photo above from the first day of the 2016 harvest. Along with it came an offer we couldn’t refuse: an allocation of their limited edition first harvest olio nuovo. Naturally we jumped at the chance are super excited to report that we got our hands on 50 bottles of this beauty and will be flying it into Singapore next week. That's three weeks from tree to table, and we're opening pre-orders now. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for the season and we expect to sell out quickly. So what is first harvest olio...
